In response to your poll, I do both, but I typically buy digital copies of single issues on Kickstarter and then get the physical edition for the collected version. I don't have the space for single issues anymore. Some would argue I don't have the space for trades either, but the shelves haven't broken yet.
I buy the issues as they come out because I love comic books. The physical format that I've been buying since 1963. Stories that are published initially as full volumes just don't have the same exciting appeal as a tale that is gradually revealed over time in floppy format. Plus the prices are higher, which can be tough to absorb if one is already supporting multiple continuing series. I need to pay for #2s and #3s of stories I am already involved with, so volume one of a new unknown project might need to get passed over. Can't afford EVERYTHING and don't have the time and energy to read it ALL.
I totally get it! I'm the same way. I love how nice a good collected edition can look on my shelf, but it's a lot harder to sample series. Getting collected every time would just be less to spread around.
For Kickstarter in particular, I tend to support digital versions and if I really love the series, I'll pick up a nice collected edition later on. It's kind of double-dipping on my part, but I guess that's extra support for the creators I really like too!

I do the same! Not only is it space concerns, but shipping to Canada always seems to be prohibitive.
