Welcome Back
Time flies.
If you seek advice for audience building, the first thing you’re told is to start an email list. That always sounded icky to me. I’ve never wanted to collect readers like Pokémon.
It’s corny, but I want to build relationships – even parasocial ones that I felt whenever I got insight into my favourite creators' lives.
Rebel Without a Crew, by auteur Robert Rodriguez, was my guidebook in Film School. I loved his start-up, do-it-yourself attitude. If he could learn to do something, he’d do it himself. He would make his art exist by sheer force of will.
I vowed to do something equally worthy of documenting. I don’t know if I’ve hit those heights yet. I still have a lot of goals I want to achieve.
It’s been a short three years. I feel like I just got started weeks ago, timidly reaching out to Lane Lloyd with a silly idea for clones arguing over who gets to be the ‘prime’ while out on a dinner date.
Instead, we’re at Post #100 with nearly 3,000 subscribers, and 100s of listeners, like yourself.
I think the longevity of this newsletter is thanks to it being more than a simple mailing list. This is my Rebel Without a Crew. I’m sharing my journey with you – and I thank you for being here.
Beyond the paywall, I’ll share the biggest lessons I’ve learned for running a successful Substack.
If we’re leaving you here, see you Wednesday on Post #101.
